The Heinerfest in Darmstadt
The Heinerfest is one of the largest city centre festivals in Germany and takes place every year in Darmstadt, Hesse. It is traditionally celebrated on the first weekend in July and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city centre every year.
Origin and history
The first Heinerfest was launched in 1951. The aim was to create a festival for all citizens after the Second World War, regardless of their origin, religion or age. It was named after the affectionate nickname ‘Heiner’ given to the inhabitants of Darmstadt.
