Chemnitz - Weihnachtsmarkt

The Chemnitz Christmas Market is one of the largest and most atmospheric in Saxony, transforming the historic market square and the adjacent Neumarkt in the heart of the city into a traditional festive centre every year. What makes this market so special is its deep and consistent roots in the traditions of the Ore Mountains, which are reflected in every detail of its design.

The central landmark of the market is the over 12-metre-high, intricately designed Ore Mountains Christmas pyramid, which towers next to the town hall and is a masterpiece of regional woodcarving. The festive scene is complemented by a large, often hand-carved nativity scene and numerous life-size wooden figures that authentically depict traditional working and family life in the Ore Mountains.

At over 200 lovingly decorated stalls, visitors will find a wide range of Erzgebirge folk art and high-quality handicrafts, including the famous Schwibbögen (decorative candle holders), Räuchermännchen (smoking men) and nutcrackers. The culinary offerings are also typically Saxon and traditional for winter: in addition to numerous types of mulled wine and punch served in cosy huts, visitors can enjoy Chemnitz specialities, the original Christmas stollen, Pulsnitz gingerbread and hearty regional dishes.

A fixed and festive part of the supporting programme is the traditional miners' parade, in which miners' guilds in their historical uniforms march through the city centre to honour the region's mining tradition.
