Berchtesgadener Advent

The Berchtesgaden Advent is a deeply traditional and incomparably atmospheric Christmas market, nestled in the majestic backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. What makes this market special is its location in the historic centre of Berchtesgaden, where it unfolds around the Schlossplatz and the venerable collegiate church, with the mighty Watzmann mountain towering in the background.

The market attaches great importance to authenticity and tradition and deliberately distances itself from excessive kitsch. Instead, regional craftsmanship and folk art dominate the scene: visitors discover life-size carved figures such as the ‘peacock’ or the ‘Oaschpfeifenrössl’ between the stalls, reflecting the region's centuries-old woodcarving tradition. A central and popular feature is the Christmas tree maze on the Schlossplatz, which consists of hundreds of festively decorated fir trees and offers a magical experience, especially for families.

The festive atmosphere is enhanced by daily and weekly customs. On Advent weekends, the festive melodies of the tower brass band ring out from the towers of the collegiate church. The night watchman tour on Friday evening adds a historical touch, guiding visitors through Berchtesgaden illuminated at night. The market is also an experience for children, with attractions such as a nostalgic carousel, a mini train and creative workshops. In terms of cuisine, the market offers deeply rooted Bavarian delicacies and warming traditional drinks. A special highlight in the week before Christmas Eve is the traditional custom of Christkindlanschießen (Christ Child shooting) by the local Christmas marksmen, which impressively underlines the market's deep roots in regional customs. The Berchtesgaden Advent is thus a market that uniquely combines tranquillity, contemplation and alpine flair.
