Ascheberg - Jacobi-Kirmes

The municipality of Ascheberg is known and loved as a centre for funfairs. The month of July each year is dedicated to the funfair. In terms of size, the St. Anna fair in Davensberg is a rather tranquil and cosy village fair. In contrast, the Jacobi fair, which has been celebrated for several centuries on the weekend after the feast of St James the Apostle (25 July), has developed into the largest village fair in Münsterland.

According to a tradition dating back to 1649, it goes back to the St Catherine's procession, which was already very old at the time. Even then, several thousand people travelled to Ascheberg, sometimes from far and wide, to celebrate this festival to the full. In modern times, the festival has changed into a funfair as we understand it today. Around 120 showmen invite visitors from near and far to celebrate the ‘fifth season’, especially in the evening and at night, in a way that is very rare in this form.
