Izegem (BE) - Septemberkermis

The September fair in Izegem is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated fair events in West Flanders. Over a period of more than a week, the city centre is transformed into a lively and colourful fairground that attracts visitors from across the region. The fair is a unique blend of traditional folk festivals and modern attractions.

The fair traditionally begins on the first Friday in September and lasts until the second Sunday of the month. The festivities are concentrated in the central squares, particularly the Grote Markt and the Korenmarkt, and extend through the surrounding streets. The atmosphere is lively and festive, characterised by music, lights and the smell of traditional fairground treats.

The Kermis in Izegem is not just a fair, but also deeply rooted in local traditions.

The ‘Schoentjesworp’: One of the highlights and the best-known traditional event is the ‘Schoentjesworp’ (shoe throwing), which usually takes place on the last Sunday. From an elevated point, small shoes, often filled with vouchers, sweets or small gifts, are thrown into the crowd. This spectacle attracts families with children in particular.

- The closing fireworks: The fair comes to a spectacular end on the last day with a large fireworks display that lights up the sky above the city.
