Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont (BE) - Foire du Carnaval

The Foire du Carnaval in Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont is a folk festival deeply rooted in Walloon folklore, which transforms the town into a vibrant festival mile every year during the Laetare carnival. Unlike many modern fairs, which have been relegated to remote open spaces, this fair is an organic part of city life and extends right through the urban structures.

The colourful hustle and bustle is concentrated mainly along Rue de Gouy and extends to the area around Place de l'Église. This arrangement in the streets of the centre creates an incomparable proximity to the action: visitors stroll between the rides and game stalls while the traditional rhythms of the carnival drums fill the air. As the fair takes place at the same time as the large folkloric parades, a unique symbiosis of fairground fun and the historical rites of the ‘Gilles’ is created.

The special charm of this event is particularly evident in the evening hours, when the facades of Rue de Gouy are illuminated by colourful fairy lights. The smell of typical fairground specialities mingles with the exuberant atmosphere of the carnival revellers celebrating in the local cafés and right next to the attractions. This fair is not an isolated event, but the beating heart of a town that swaps its everyday life for tradition, light and movement for a few days each year.
