About the Park
Within sight of the Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo Sydney is located directly on the Pacific Ocean in the northern part of Sydney. It first opened its doors as a city zoo in 1916 and has since grown to cover an area of 28ha. Well over 150 animal species are kept in the zoo, divided into 8 zoo-geographical regions. Besides tigers, lions and chimpanzees, Australia's first elephant was born here at Taronga Zoo. As Taronga is a non-profit zoo, all income is invested in measures to save wildlife. In addition to educational approaches, the zoo also offers overnight accommodation directly in the reserve.
