About the Park
Dubbo is located about 400 kilometres northwest of Sydney. About 5 kilometres from the city centre is Taronga Western Plains Zoo, also known as Dubbo Zoo. It was established in 1977 as an extension and addition to Taronga Zoo Sydney. The idea was to provide breeding facilities for animals that require a lot of outdoor space, such as elephants or antelopes. So they started with 35 animals from 6 countries and then grew. Since an area of 300ha was available (equivalent to 3 square kilometres), a unique experience could be created for the visitors. Animals and people are only separated by hidden water ditches, which gives the impression of experiencing the animals in the wild. Hippos, giraffes and Asian otters can be found here as well as calicoes, koalas and emus.
