About the Park
Opened in 1862, Melbourne Zoo is one of Australia's oldest zoos. Together with other zoos in the state, it has joined together to form Victoria's Zoos. Only a few kilometres from the city centre, over 300 animal species are shown to visitors on 22 hectares. The zoo is divided into bioclimatic zones so that animals are housed in a natural habitat. The African Rainforest area is home to gorillas and lemurs, the Asian Rainforest area to orangutans, tigers, otters and elephants, and the Australian Bush area is teeming with native animals such as kangaroos, wombats and koalas.
