About the Park
A good 65 kilometres east of Australia's southernmost city, Melbourne, lies Healesville Sanctuary, which opened in 1934 under the name Sir Colin MacKenzie Sanctuary and was later renamed. This zoo specialises in native animals and is home to, among others, the platypus, which is special among mammals because it lays eggs. More than 200 animal species are exhibited on an area of over 32 hectares, including a large number of native bird species. Of course, you will also find the popular koalas, wombats and dingoes.
