About the Park
Townsville is located on the east coast of the Australian continent around 350 kilometres south of Cairns, directly opposite the Great Barrier Reef. In 1987, the world's largest living coral reef aquarium was opened under the name Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. It was not until 1999 that it was renamed ReefHQ. The aquarium was built as a bicentennial memorial project and its coral reef exhibit features 130 species of coral and 120 species of fish along with several hundred species of starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, brittle stars, snails and sponges. A major refurbishment took place in 2019 - 2023.
