About the Park
Around six kilometres from the port city of Newcastle in the state of New South Wales and around two hours' drive from the metropolis of Sydney, you will find the 182-hectare Blackbutt Reserve. Built on the site of the former Scottish-Australian Mining Company coal mine, the reserve is home to animals such as koalas, wombats, native birds, emus and kangaroos, which you can admire here in their natural habitats. You will also find various reptiles such as crocodiles, spiders, lizards and monitor lizards in the reptile houses. The rangers and animal keepers will also provide you with lots of information about the animals during the regular animal feedings and the reptile show. All paths in the Blackbutt Reserve are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, so that everyone can visit the reserve. You can also get very close to various animals, such as small caimans, in specially bookable experiences. The Blackbutt Reserve is open all year round and admission is free.
