About the Park
Under the name "Beerwah Reptile Park", a wildlife park opened on an area of just 2 hectares in Beerwah in 1970 between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. It was home to native wildlife such as monitor lizards, tiger snakes, freshwater crocodiles and kangaroos. In the 1980s, the wildlife park grew to four hectares and was renamed the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. In the 1990s, another renaming to "Australia Zoo" took place and was run for a long time by Crocodile Hinter Steve Irwin. His vision is for it to be the ultimate global zoological destination, acting as a world leader in conservation, both in terms of wildlife and habitat. Of particular note is crocodile research. By 2022, Australia Zoo covers over 700 hectares and employs more than 500 people, continuing Steve's mission of "conservation through exciting education".
