About the Park
Australia's second oldest zoo (after Melbourne Zoo) was opened in 1883 and has grown over time from about 6ha to 8ha. It can present more than 250 species to its visitors, most of which are indigenous. An expansion with exotic animals and birds is in fact not possible, as the import of birds from overseas has been banned in Australia since 1943. The zoo focuses particularly on species from the "supercontinent" Gondwana , which later broke up into South America, India , Africa, Australia and Southeast Asia. The botanical similarities between the regions are showcased in the zoo's main exhibits, including a Southeast Asian rainforest and a walk-through aviary in the Australian rainforest wetlands. Thus, Adelaide Zoo, centrally located in the city's interior, has long been known for its impressive bird collection.
